SHOCK 

DEFINITION

  • Shock is a condition that occurs when the circulatory system (heart, blood and blood vessels) fails to provide adequate oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body.
SYMPTOMS
  • Restlessness or irritability; fast, weak pulse; fast breathing; pale or bluish, cool moist skin; increased thirst; nausea and vomiting; drowsiness or loss of consciousness.
TREATMENT
  • Assist student to lie down.  Elevate legs approximately 12 inches without bending knees.
  • If head or neck injuries suspected, keep student flat - DO NOT elevate legs.
  • Maintain body temperature, use blankets if necessary.
  • Send someone to call 911 or contact emergency response team.
  • DO NOT leave student alone.
  • Notify parents and school nurse.
  • Take or send a copy of medical information with student to the hospital.
  • A detailed incident report should be initiated immediately.

SEIZURES - CHOKING
NOSEBLEEDS / BLEEDING - SHOCK
DIABETIC EMERGENCIES - DENTAL INJURY
BURNS
NAUSEA / VOMITING / ABDOMINAL PAIN / FAINTING
BITES / STINGS / SKIN IRRITATION
EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
