SEIZURES 

TREATMENT

  • Assist student to floor, if needed.
  • DO NOT put anything between teeth or in mouth.
  • DO NOT restrain.
  • Clear area to protect student from injury.
  • Start a written record of the seizure behavior and treatment including length of seizure activity.
AFTER SEIZURE
  • Permit student to rest.
  • Continue documentation of episode.
  • Monitor for second seizure.
  • Monitor for confusion or lack of consciousness.
EMERGENCY
  • Initiate emergency response through 911 or your local emergency team if:
    • The seizure lasts longer than a few minutes (5-10 minutes).
    • A second seizure begins soon after the first.
    • Student does not regain consciousness after jerking movements have stopped.
    • Student is pregnant.
    • Student is a know diabetic.
    • Student is having first seizure ever.
    • Alcohol or drugs are suspected.
If you know the student has epilepsy, it usually is not necessary to call 911 or emergency response team unless the emergency conditions
listed above occur.

NAUSEA / VOMITING / ABDOMINAL PAIN / FAINTING
BITES / STINGS / SKIN IRRITATION
EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
