POISONS

Treatment

  • Use disposable gloves to remove poison from contact with body.
    • Oral - wipe out mouth
    • Eyes - flush with water
    • Skin - remove clothing, brush off any dry chemicals, flush affected areas with large amounts of water
    • Fumes - get student to fresh air
  • DO NOT give student anything to eat or drink unless instructed to do so by poison control.
  • Call Poison Control Center - 1-800-860-0620.
  • Follow instructions of Poison Control Center.
  • Call parent and school nurse.
  • Save any poison containers or vomitus for medical personnel.
  • Initiation of Ipecac or charcoal should be done by medical personnel or parent if instructed to do so by Poison Control.
  • CPR may be initiated by someone trained in the process at any time, if needed.
  • Call 911 or local emergency response team.
  • Take or send a copy of medical information with student to hospital.
  • The poison container and/or vomitus should also accompany student.
  • A detailed incident report should be initiated immediately.
