NAUSEA / VOMITING / ABDOMINAL PAIN / FAINTING

Nausea and Vomiting

  • Have student lie down. Keep quiet, warm and under observation. 
  • Give no fluids or food.
  • Notify parents and school nurse.
  • Advise a consultation with a physician, if symptoms continue for more than half an hour.
Abdominal Pain
  • Have student lie down. 
  • Give no medication or anything by mouth. 
  • Notify parents and school nurse.
  • Advise a consultation with a physician, if symptoms continue for more than half an hour.
Menstrual Cramps
  • Evaluate for excessive bleeding and symptoms of shock (drowsiness, confusion, clammy skin). 
  • Evaluate for bleeding that is not part of normal cycle for possible miscarriage.
  • Notify parents and school nurse. 
  • Advise a consultation with a physician, if symptoms continue for more than half an hour.
  • For mild cramps - Encourage student to continue her activities.  If student has had an evaluation by physician, allow student to self-administer Tylenol or Ibuprofen, if she has her own.
Fainting
  • Keep student lying down.
  • Loosen tight clothing around the neck. 
  • Make sure student gets plenty of fresh air. 
  • Bathe face with cold water or cool wet cloth.
  • Give no liquids until student is fully conscious.
  • Assess reason for fainting (ex. too hot, allow to cool down);  unknown-keep warm and treat for shock.
  • Notify parents and school nurse.
BACK & NECK INJURY - EYE INJURY
HEAD INJURY / HEADACHE - EAR INJURY

SEIZURES - CHOKING
NOSEBLEEDS / BLEEDING - SHOCK
DIABETIC EMERGENCIES - DENTAL INJURY
BURNS
