DENTAL INJURIES
Fractured Jaw

Notify parents and school nurse.

Call 911 or local emergency response team.
Broken Tooth
-
May rinse mouth with warm water if desired.

Notify parents to take to the dentist immediately.

Notify school nurse.
Toothache
-
May rinse the mouth with warm water.
-
DO NOT apply Tylenol or other medications to aching tooth.
-
Notify parents to take student to the dentist.
Knocked Out Tooth
-
When knocked out, find it and place it in moist gauze or ziplock baggie.
-
DO NOT clean tooth, socket or rinse mouth.
-
Notify parents to take to the dentist.

Notify school nurse.
Bitten Lip or Tongue
-
Using disposable gloves apply direct pressure to the bleeding area with
a sterile or clean cloth.
-
If swelling is present, apply cold compress.
-
If bleeding continues, notify parents to take student to the physician
or emergency room.

Notify school nurse.
Orthodontic Problems - Braces and Retainers
-
If wire is embedded in the cheek, tongue or tissue, DO NOT attempt
to remove it.
-
If a wire is causing irritation, cover the end with a small piece of orthodontic
wax.
-
If student has a loose or broken appliance, notify parents to take student
to orthodontist with appliance.
