BURNS
General Instructions
-
DO NOT break blisters.
-
DO NOT apply anything to burns.
-
Never remove burned or melted clothing from burned skin.
-
DO NOT try to clean burned skin.
-
Treat for shock.
-
Always transport to hospital if two (2) areas of the body (hands, face,
feet, neck or genitals) are burned, if a small child, or elderly person.
-
Notify parents and school nurse.
-
Call 911 or local emergency response team.
-
Take or send a copy of medical information with student to hospital.
-
A detailed incident report should be initiated immediately.
Medical evaluation should be sought even if not deemed an emergency.
Electrical
-
Never approach student, until you are sure the scene is safe, or power
is turned off.
-
Begin CPR, if needed and you are a trained in CPR.
-
Cover burns with dry, sterile dressing, and treat for shock.
Chemical
-
Put on gloves, mask, and gown, before applying first aid.
-
Flush area with a lot of water.
-
If eye is burned by a chemical:
-
turn student on side.
-
flush eye with water from nasal bridge to outer corner of eye for a minimum
of 10-15 minutes.
-
DO NOT apply ice.
-
Remove student’s clothing if there are chemicals on them.
Heat Burns
-
Cool the burn area with a lot of cool, not cold water.
-
DO NOT apply ice.
-
Apply wet cloths to areas that can’t be immersed in water.
-
Elevate affected area to reduce swelling, if possible.
